The Peninsula of Marau begins on the far bank of the Rio Contas across from the town of Itacaré. It is the start of the Dende Coast (named after the type of palm growing in the area).

From here to Barra Grande at the tip of the Peninsula lies an unbroken stretch of white sand beach fringed with coco palms, which extends for 50km. The scenery is different from Itacaré in that the peninsula is mainly flat with the exception of small hills such as Morro de Celular and Morro do Farol. The backdrop is a mixture of coco and Denoe palms, the beaches are more open but with beautiful coral reefs and calmer seas. Across the river from Itacaré the beaches of Pontal and Piracanga are almost completely deserted. Algadoes, Arandis, Saquaira and Cassange have a few pousadas between them with summer houses dotted here and there. At the Saquaira there is a store suppying the basic food necessities.

Separated from the ocean by a narrow sand bank, Cassange has a beautiful freshwater lagoon suitable for swimming and waterskiing. Taipu de Fora, The next stretch of beach going north is considered to be one of the most beautiful in Brazil. As well as having the obligatory white sand and swaying coco palms, Taipu has a huge natural swimming pool 1km long x 500m wide created by the coral reef which appears at low tide. It is an excellent place for snorkelling/scuba diving.

Some of the best pousadas on the peninsula are located here such as Velas a Vento. There are also a couple of very good bar/restaurants on the beach. The beaches of Bombaça (with the fabulous five-star Kiaroa Resort), Tres Coqueiros and Ponta de Mutua have a few pousadas and summer houses. At Ponta de Mutua there is a lighthouse which marks the entrance to the bay of Camamu.

Around the point is the village of Barra Grande. Located on the bay side of the Peninsula with a lovely 2km stretch of beach with calm and shallow water. Little has changed over the years in this charming village with its sandy streets and small colourful houses sheltered bellow the palm, bouganvillea and mango trees. There are now about a dozen pousadas in and around the village, a few shops, beach bars and some excellent restaurants, but as yet, no bank!

How to get there

Barra Grande is located 200km south of Salvador and 150km north of Ilheus. For international tourists the quickest way to arrive is by taking an air taxi from Salvador international airport run by Addey Taxi Aéreo who have daily flight to Barra Grande from R$290 one way. Aerostar taxi aéreo also have flights Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays for R$293 one way. The flight lasts 40 minutes. Alternatively, there are daily flights from Rio, Sao Paulo and Salvador to Ilheus airport. From there get a taxi to Itacaré (approx one hour travelling time). From Itacaré a 4x4 can be hired to take you to Barra Grande and other parts of the Peninsula.

If not in a hurry, there is a ferry from Salvador to Camamu the main town on the bay which takes two hours. From there another boat will take you to Barra Grande with a journey time of 1 hour 40 mins.

Real Estate

Although having some of the best beaches in Bahia and offering a wealth of sporting and eco activities, there is still very little development in comparison to other parts of Bahia (the exception being the super luxury Kiaroa resort). This is due in large part to the difficult nature of the access. However, with the Bahian state government currently taking very pro-active measures to promote tourism along its coast, there are advanced plans to construct a new highway from Camamu to Marau and with it a subsequent explosion in land values.

Already several famous Brazilian politicians and captains of industry have mansions discreetly hidden along the Peninsula. Do they know something we don’t?
